# Undo, Trash and restoring deleted items

> Take back your last action with ⌘Z, restore deleted tasks and notes from Trash, and see what deleting a goal, project, habit or life area removes.

Heym lets you take back your last action right after you do it, and keeps deleted tasks and notes in Trash so you can bring them back later. Goals, projects, habits and life areas don't go to Trash: deleting one is permanent. This page covers all three, and how to put something away safely by archiving it instead.

## Undo your last action

When you complete, delete or reschedule a task, a message appears at the bottom of the window with an **Undo** button. Click **Undo**, or press **⌘Z** (**Ctrl+Z** on Windows). In the Mac app, **Edit** → **Undo** does the same.

Clicking Delete removes the task and shows Moved to Trash with an Undo button. Clicking Undo puts the task back in the list" />

Deleting a task, then clicking Undo

* **Only while the message is on screen.** It goes away after about 5 seconds, or as soon as you do something else that shows a new message.
* **One step back.** Undo takes back only the latest action, and there's no redo.
* **Not while you're typing.** In a task name, a description or a note, **⌘Z** undoes your typing instead.

These actions show **Undo**:

| Action | Message |
| - | - |
| Completing a task | **Task completed** |
| Deleting a task or a note | **Moved to Trash** |
| Changing a task's date, also by dragging it on the calendar | **Date updated to** the new day |
| Giving a task a goal or a life area | **Task moved to** the goal or area |
| Deleting, completing or changing several selected tasks | For example **3 tasks deleted** |

Deleting a goal, project, habit, life area or label has no **Undo**, so Heym asks you to confirm first. Archiving has no **Undo** either: bring an archived item back with **Restore** (see [Archive instead of deleting](#archive-instead-of-deleting)).

## Find deleted tasks and notes in Trash

Click **Trash** at the bottom of the sidebar, or press **G** then **B**. Switch between **Tasks** and **Notes** at the top right. Each item shows when it was deleted.

The first task is pointed at, so a restore arrow and a trash can show at the end of its row](https://mintcdn.com/heym/RxdohfEkT1hOgZzU/images/undo-and-trash/trash-list.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=RxdohfEkT1hOgZzU\&q=85\&s=889ac7c89afd9af4bfd94084a204773e)

Items stay in Trash until you restore them or delete them for good.

## Restore a task or note

1. Open **Trash** and choose the **Tasks** or **Notes** tab.
2. Point at the item and click the round arrow at the end of its row (**Restore**).

The item goes back to where it was, with its date, labels, goal or life area. You can also open an item in Trash: a bar at the top has **Restore** and **Delete permanently**.

## Delete something for good

1. In **Trash**, point at the item and click the trash can at the end of its row (**Delete permanently**).
2. Confirm in the **Delete task permanently?** or **Delete note permanently?** window.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting permanently can't be undone.

To restore or delete several items at once, select them, then press **⌘K** or click **Actions** in the bar at the bottom. Choose **Restore … tasks** or **Delete … tasks forever** (on the **Notes** tab, **Restore … notes** or **Delete … notes forever**). How to select several items is on [Keyboard shortcuts](/help/keyboard-shortcuts.md).

![Trash with three tasks selected and the actions menu open over the list, labeled 3 tasks, offering Restore 3 tasks and Delete 3 tasks forever](https://mintcdn.com/heym/RxdohfEkT1hOgZzU/images/undo-and-trash/trash-select-all.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=RxdohfEkT1hOgZzU\&q=85\&s=403149d16e4567ff407f129c911c5555)

There's no Empty Trash button. To clear it, press **⌘A** to select everything on the tab, then **⌘K** and choose **Delete … tasks forever** (or **Delete … notes forever**), then confirm.

## What deleting each item does

| Item | What deleting it does | Can you get it back? |
| - | - | - |
| Task | Moves to Trash with everything in it. A repeating task goes with all its occurrences. | Yes: **Undo**, or restore it from Trash. |
| Note | Moves to Trash. | Yes: **Undo**, or restore it from Trash. |
| Project | Deleted for good, with its sections and milestones. Its tasks move to Trash. | No. Its tasks can be restored from Trash, but they come back without the project. |
| Goal | Deleted for good, with its subgoals. Its tasks, projects, habits and notes stay, no longer linked to the goal. Tasks keep the goal's life area. | No. |
| Habit | Deleted for good, with its whole completion history. | No. |
| Life area | Deleted for good, with its cover and vision board pictures. Its goals, projects, habits, tasks and notes stay, without a life area. | No. |
| Label | Removed from every task and note that had it. | No. |

To remove just one occurrence of a repeating task, see [Repeating tasks](/help/repeating-tasks.md).

## Archive instead of deleting

If you might want a goal, project, habit or life area again, archive it. Archiving takes it out of your lists without deleting anything, and you can bring it back at any time.

1. Open the item's **⋯** menu and choose **Archive**.
2. To find it again, open **View settings** on the Goals, Projects, Habits or Life areas page and turn on **Show archived**.
3. Open the item's **⋯** menu and choose **Restore**.

An archived item is read-only until you restore it. Archiving a life area asks whether to archive its goals too. Archiving doesn't archive the tasks inside: tasks in an archived project, goal or area still show in Today, Upcoming and your views. The details are on [Goals](/help/goals.md), [Projects](/help/projects.md), [Habits](/help/habits.md) and [Life areas](/help/life-areas.md).

## Good to know

* **A task loses its goal or area:** when you delete a goal, its tasks stay in the goal's life area. When you delete a life area, its tasks stay but have no area. A task left with no date and no goal, project or area shows up in your **Inbox**.
* **Shared items:** anyone who can edit a shared task or note can delete it and restore it. Trash shows who deleted it, such as **Deleted by Ines**. Only the owner can delete it for good. See [Share with others](/help/sharing.md).
* **Notes in Trash don't count** toward the 20 notes on the Free plan. See [Free, Pro and Lifetime](/help/plans.md).
