# Keyboard shortcuts in Heym

> Every Heym shortcut in one place: jump between pages with G, move through lists, change many items at once with ⌘K, format text and switch Mac app tabs.

Almost everything in Heym can be done without the mouse: opening pages, adding and completing tasks, changing many items at once and formatting text. This page lists every shortcut, grouped by where you use it, and shows how to select several items and change them together.

The shortcuts work the same in the web app and the [Mac app](/help/mac.md). The Mac app adds a few of its own for tabs and windows, listed under [Mac app shortcuts](#mac-app-shortcuts).

## See the shortcuts inside Heym

Press **?** anywhere in Heym, or click your name at the top of the sidebar and choose **Keyboard shortcuts**. The list opens on the right side of the window. Press **Esc** to close it.

![The Keyboard shortcuts list with the General group (Open command menu, Open settings, Toggle Pomodoro timer, Show keyboard shortcuts, Undo the last action) and the Navigation group of G then a letter shortcuts](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/keyboard-shortcuts/shortcuts-panel.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=2e6aa3ecc21f6bc092f4140f0b138c35)

Press ? to open the shortcut list

Single-key shortcuts, like **C** or **G** then **I**, don't fire while you're typing in a text box, so they never get in the way of your writing.

## General

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| **⌘K** | Open the command menu: search, create, go to a page, or act on selected items |
| **⇧⌘,** | Open Settings |
| **⇧P** | Hide or show the [Pomodoro timer](/help/pomodoro.md) (part of Pro). It only works after you've opened the timer since you last opened or reloaded Heym, for example with **Start focus** on Home |
| **?** | Show the keyboard shortcuts |
| **⌘Z** | Undo your last action while its **Undo** message is still on screen, for example completing or deleting a task. See [Undo and Trash](/help/undo-and-trash.md) |
| **⌘.** | Hide or show the sidebar |
| **C** | Create a task |

## Go to a page

Press **G**, let go, then press the second key within about a second.

The keys pressed show at the bottom of the window" />

G then T opens Today, G then H Habits, G then N Notes

| Shortcut | Goes to |
| - | - |
| **G** then **M** | Home |
| **G** then **I** | Inbox |
| **G** then **T** | Today |
| **G** then **U** | Upcoming |
| **G** then **V** | Views |
| **G** then **A** | Areas (your life areas) |
| **G** then **G** | Goals |
| **G** then **P** | Projects |
| **G** then **H** | Habits |
| **G** then **N** | Notes |
| **G** then **F** | Pomodoro |
| **G** then **C** | Completed (the view of tasks you've finished) |
| **G** then **B** | Trash |
| **G** then **1** to **9** | Your 1st to 9th favorite, in the order they appear in the sidebar |

To add favorites and change their order, see [Customize Heym](/help/customize.md#pin-favorites-to-the-sidebar). These shortcuts work even for pages you've hidden from the sidebar.

## Move through a list

These work in task lists and in the lists of goals, projects, habits, notes and life areas, except the two marked for task lists only. Press **↓** or **J** once to put the highlight on the first item.

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| **↓** or **J** | Move down |
| **↑** or **K** | Move up |
| **⌘↑** or **⌘↓** | Jump to the first or last item |
| **Enter** | Open the highlighted item |
| **⌘Enter** | Rename the highlighted task in place (task lists only) |
| **⇧Enter** | Add a new task below the highlighted one (task lists only) |
| **E** | Complete the highlighted task, or reopen it if it's done |
| **⌘⌫** | Delete the highlighted item. You can undo a deleted task or note. Goals, projects, habits and life areas ask you to confirm first, and deleting them can't be undone |
| **Esc** | Step back: clear the selection, then close the open task, then remove the highlight |
| **⌘\\** | Close the task you have open on the right |

## Select several items and change them at once

Select items with the keyboard, then pick what to do with all of them from the command menu. This works on tasks, goals, projects, habits, notes and life areas.

**1. Highlight the first item**

Open a list, such as **Inbox**, and press **↓** or **J**.

**2. Add items to the selection**

Press **X** to add the highlighted item. Move with **↓** or **↑** and press **X** again for each item you want. **⇧↓** and **⇧↑** extend the selection by one item, and **⌘A** selects everything in the list.

**3. Choose an action**

Press **⌘K**, or click **Actions** in the bar at the bottom of the window that shows how many items you've selected. Pick an action from **Bulk actions**.

![The command menu labeled 2 tasks, with the search box reading Run an action on 2 tasks and the Bulk actions Set priority, Change labels, Set date, Set alignment, Assign 2 tasks to, Set reminders, Mark 2 tasks complete and Delete 2 tasks](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/keyboard-shortcuts/selection-command-menu.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=6649d1d7d6f71c89738fc07c86ef7164)

The command menu with two tasks selected

What you can change depends on what you selected:

| Selected | Actions |
| - | - |
| Tasks | **Set priority…**, **Change labels…**, **Set date…**, **Set alignment…**, **Assign … to...**, **Set reminders…**, **Mark … complete** (or **Mark … incomplete** when they're all done), **Delete …** |
| Goals | **Mark … completed**, **Delete …** |
| Projects | **Mark … completed**, **Delete …** |
| Habits | **Set reminders…**, **Delete …** |
| Notes | **Delete …** (the notes move to Trash) |
| Life areas | **Delete …** |
| Tasks or notes in **Trash** | **Restore …**, **Delete … forever** (see [Undo and Trash](/help/undo-and-trash.md)) |

With tasks selected, **E** completes them all and **⌘⌫** deletes them all, without opening the menu. **⌘⌫** also deletes selected notes. For other items, choose **Delete …** in the menu. To clear the selection, press **Esc** or click **×** in the bar at the bottom.

## Calendar

When a list is shown as a calendar:

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| **←** or **→** | Show the previous or next days |
| **T** | Jump back to today |

See [Plan on the calendar](/help/calendar.md) for the calendar itself.

## Format text

These work in notes, in a task's description and in a project's **Notes** section.

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| **⌘B** | Bold |
| **⌘I** | Italic |
| **⌘U** | Underline |
| **⇧⌘S** | Strikethrough |
| **⌘E** | Inline code |
| **⌥⌘1**, **⌥⌘2**, **⌥⌘3** | Heading 1, 2 or 3 |
| **⌥⌘0** | Regular text |
| **⇧⌘8** | Bulleted list |
| **⇧⌘7** | Numbered list |
| **⇧⌘9** | Checklist |
| **⇧⌘B** | Blockquote |
| **⌥⌘C** | Code block |
| **⌘Z** | Undo |
| **⇧⌘Z** | Redo |

### Type Markdown as you write

Type these at the start of a line, in the same places, and Heym turns them into formatting:

| Type | You get |
| - | - |
| `#` then **Space** | Heading 1 |
| `##` then **Space** | Heading 2 |
| `###` then **Space** | Heading 3 |
| `-` then **Space** | Bulleted list |
| `1.` then **Space** | Numbered list |
| `[]` then **Space** | Checklist |
| `>` then **Space** | Blockquote |
| ` ``` ` then **Space** | Code block |
| `---` | Divider |

Inside a line, `**Text**` makes bold, `*Text*` italic, `` `Code` `` inline code and `~~Text~~` strikethrough.

## Mac app shortcuts

The [Mac app](/help/mac.md) adds these on top of everything above:

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| **⌘N** | Create a task (**File** → **New Task**) |
| **⌘T** | Open a new tab on your start page (on Today if your start page is **Last visited**) |
| **⌘W** | Close the tab. On the last tab, closes the window |
| **⇧⌘T** | Reopen the tab you closed last. Press again to go further back |
| **⌘1** to **⌘8** | Go to tab 1 to 8 |
| **⌘9** | Go to the last tab |
| **⇧⌘\[** or **⇧⌘]** | Go to the previous or next tab |
| **⌥⌘←** or **⌥⌘→** | Go to the previous or next tab |
| **⇧⌘W** | Close the window |

## Turn off single-key shortcuts

If you control your computer by voice, single letters can trigger shortcuts by accident. You can turn those off and keep the rest.

1. Click your name at the top of the sidebar, then **Settings**.
2. Click **Preferences**.
3. Turn off **Single-key shortcuts**.

This turns off every shortcut that is a single key, such as **C**, **E**, **X**, **J**, **K**, **?**, **⇧P**, **T** on the calendar and all the **G** then … shortcuts. Arrow keys, **Enter**, **Esc** and shortcuts with **⌘** keep working. The shortcut list then says **Single-key shortcuts are turned off.**, with a **Turn them on in Settings** link.

![Settings open on Preferences with Theme, Language, Default start page and the Single-key shortcuts switch, which is outlined](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/keyboard-shortcuts/single-key-setting.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=821602baf6f5ce7dc72296aa6f1689db)

## Using Heym in a browser on Windows or Linux

Heym's shortcut list shows **Ctrl** and **Alt** in place of **⌘** and **⌥** when you're not on a Mac. Press **Ctrl** for the command menu (**Ctrl+K**), undo (**Ctrl+Z**), the list shortcuts above and all text formatting.

Three shortcuts have no **Ctrl** version yet: opening Settings, hiding the sidebar and closing the open task. Use the menu under your name for **Settings**, and click the sidebar and close buttons instead.
