# Plan your day with Inbox, Today and Upcoming

> What lands in your Inbox, how Today splits your day into morning, afternoon and evening, and how Upcoming lays out the days and months ahead.

Three lists at the top of the sidebar hold your tasks by when they're due. **Inbox** collects tasks you haven't filed yet, **Today** shows what's due today, and **Upcoming** lays out everything with a date. This page explains what goes where and how to sort, group and filter each list.

## Inbox: tasks you haven't filed yet

A task stays in your **Inbox** while it has no date and no alignment: no project, goal or life area. Give it either one and it leaves the Inbox for Today, Upcoming or the project, goal or area you picked.

New tasks land here when you add them with **C** and don't give them a date or a home. That makes the Inbox the place to empty your head quickly and file things later.

To move a task out of the Inbox, click it and set its **Date** or its **Alignment**. Tasks someone shares with you never show in your Inbox; it's only for your own tasks.

To file several tasks, move to each one with **↓** or **↑** and press **X**, or press **⌘A** to select them all. Then press **⌘K** and choose **Set date…** or **Set alignment…** to file them all at once. See [Keyboard shortcuts](/help/keyboard-shortcuts.md#select-several-items-and-change-them-at-once).

## Today: what's due today

**Today** shows every task due today, plus anything you missed on earlier days. By default it splits the day by start time.

![The Today list with the sections Overdue, All day, Morning, Afternoon and Evening, and a Reschedule button next to Overdue](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/inbox-today-upcoming/today.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=55d5de66ee22bb947beb3a1b3ce2796e)

| Section | What's in it |
| - | - |
| **Overdue** | Tasks from earlier days that you haven't completed, oldest first |
| **All day** | Today's tasks without a start time |
| **Morning** | Tasks starting before 12:00 PM |
| **Afternoon** | Tasks starting from 12:00 PM to 5:59 PM |
| **Evening** | Tasks starting at 6:00 PM or later |

Click **New task** under a section to add a task right there. Under **All day** the task gets today's date and no time. Under **Morning**, **Afternoon** or **Evening** it also gets a start time of 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM or 6:00 PM, which you can change afterwards.

### Move everything that's overdue

Click **Reschedule** next to **Overdue** and pick a date. Every overdue task moves to that day in one go. For a [repeating task](/help/repeating-tasks.md), only the missed occurrence moves; the rest of its schedule stays as it is.

To move a single task instead, point at it, click the handle on its left and click the sun (**Today**), the sunrise (**Tomorrow**) or the next button (**Next week**). See [Tasks](/help/tasks.md#change-the-date-or-priority-from-the-list). For a repeating task, drag it to another day in **Upcoming** instead. Dragging moves only the missed occurrence, while the handle menu changes the date the whole series starts from.

## Upcoming: the days and months ahead

**Upcoming** lists every task with a date, from overdue to next year.

![The Upcoming list with Overdue at the top, then the heading Today, 4 Nov, with today's tasks and their times](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/inbox-today-upcoming/upcoming.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=44e206719e06bce1432271ec46cc32ad)

From top to bottom you see:

1. **Overdue**, if anything is.
2. **Today**, **Tomorrow** and every other remaining day of this month, each under its own heading.
3. One heading for each later month of this year.
4. One heading for next year, which also holds anything further out.

Click **New task** under a heading to add a task on that day. Under a month heading the task is due on the 1st of that month, and under next year's heading on January 1.

A repeating task shows up on each day it repeats until the end of this month. Occurrences after today have a repeat icon instead of a checkbox, because you can't complete them yet (see [Repeating tasks](/help/repeating-tasks.md#complete-a-repeating-task)).

## Switch to the calendar

Today and Upcoming can also show your tasks on a calendar. Click the **View settings** button (the sliders icon, top right) and choose **Calendar**; choose **List** to go back. Heym remembers your choice on this device.

On Upcoming, switch between 4 days (**4D**), a week (**W**) and a month (**M**). Today's calendar shows only today. In calendar mode, **View settings** also has **Show completed** and **Show habits**, both on at first. More on [Plan on the calendar](/help/calendar.md).

## Sort, group and filter

Each list has its own settings, and Heym keeps them until you change them.

* **View settings** (the sliders icon) holds **Sort** and **Group**. On Today, they appear while the list view is on.
* The **Filters** button (the filter icon next to it) opens a filter bar. Click **+** in the bar to add a filter.

![The View settings menu on Today with List and Calendar at the top, Sort set to Manual and Group set to Time of day, and the Group options None, Goal, Life area, Priority, Label and Time of day](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/inbox-today-upcoming/today-group-menu.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=f0138793ec4a30e93e31284f5fb6a48e)

Today's View settings, with the Group options open

| Option | Inbox | Today |
| - | - | - |
| **Sort** | **Manual**, **Priority**, **Created**, **Name** | **Manual**, **Date**, **Priority**, **Created**, **Name** |
| **Group** | **None**, **Priority**, **Label** | **None**, **Goal**, **Life area**, **Priority**, **Label**, **Time of day** |
| **Filters** | **Label**, **Priority**, **Duration** | **Label**, **Life area**, **Goal**, **Project**, **Priority**, **Date**, **Duration** |

Upcoming is always sorted and grouped by day, so its **View settings** only switch between list and calendar. Its filters are the same as Today's.

**Manual** keeps the order you drag tasks into. Choose a sort you already picked to flip its direction; an arrow shows which way it runs. Today starts grouped by **Time of day**, which gives you the Morning, Afternoon and Evening sections above.

![The filter bar's plus button with a menu listing Label, Life area, Goal, Project, Priority, Date and Duration](https://mintcdn.com/heym/n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj/images/inbox-today-upcoming/add-filter.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=n5OvCilbUvjGlsuj\&q=85\&s=549dfc3b6c82dde7a6733718e509153c)

Adding a filter on Today

Filters work on every plan. A dot on the **Filters** button reminds you a filter is on, and **Clear** in the filter bar removes them all. How filters work in detail is on [Views and filters](/help/views.md#filter-inbox-today-and-upcoming).

## Drag a task into another section

Point at a task and drag it by its handle (the six dots on its left) into another section. Heym changes the task to fit there.

| Drop it on | What changes |
| - | - |
| **All day** on Today | It's due today, with no start time or duration |
| **Morning**, **Afternoon** or **Evening** on Today | It's due today at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM or 6:00 PM, for 1 hour |
| **Today**, with **Group** set to **None** | It's due today and keeps its time |
| A day in Upcoming | It moves to that day, with no start time or duration |
| A month, or next year, in Upcoming | It moves to the 1st of that month, or to January 1 |
| A priority group | It gets that priority |
| A label group | It loses the label of the group it came from and gets this one. **No label** only takes the old label off |
| A goal group | It's aligned to that goal and leaves its project, if it had one. **No goal** takes the goal off |
| A life area group | It's aligned to that area directly, so it leaves its goal or project. **No life area** clears its alignment |

This is also a quick way to move one overdue task to today: drag it from **Overdue** into a section below it. You can't drop a task into **Overdue**.

For a task that repeats based on its **Scheduled date**, dropping it on a day or a time moves only that occurrence. Priority, label, goal and life area groups change the whole series. If the list is sorted by something other than **Manual**, Heym first asks **Would you like to remove sorting?** Click **Remove** to drop the task and switch to **Manual**.

## What happens if…

* **You complete a task.** It leaves the list. Find it again under **Views** → **Completed**, or press **G** then **C**. In calendar mode, **Show completed** keeps completed tasks visible on the calendar.
* **You add a task while a filter is on.** The task gets the filter's values, so it doesn't disappear from the list you're looking at. With **Label** **is** Errands, for example, the new task gets the Errands label.
* **Someone shares a project with you.** Its tasks show in your Today and Upcoming, except tasks assigned to someone else and tasks in anything you can only view. Shared tasks never show in your Inbox.

## Choose the page Heym opens with

Heym opens on **Home** at first. To open on your Inbox or Today instead, go to **Settings** → **Preferences** and change **Default start page** to **Inbox**, **Today** or **Last visited**. More options on [Customize Heym](/help/customize.md#choose-the-page-heym-opens-first).

To jump between the lists from anywhere, press **G** then **I** for Inbox, **G** then **T** for Today, or **G** then **U** for Upcoming.
